Through numerous projects and initiatives Thomas has become a recognized and internationally acclaimed contributor in the SOA community.

As a pioneer of the service-oriented computing platform Thomas wrote one of the very first books about SOA, followed by three additional books. (See the Books page.)

During the early 2000's, Thomas developed the XML & Web Services Integration Framework (XWIF.com), which represents years of research organized into an SOA-centric integration framework designed to leverage the advancements in data representation and logic encapsulation provided by the XML and Web Services platforms. Thomas established this framework and later documented portions of it in his first SOA book. This work was formally endorsed by IBM and Microsoft and was later assimilated into MSOAM.

Subsequent to a lengthy research project for ServiceOrientation.org (now SOAPrinciples.com), Thomas was the first to establish an industry-standard definition of the common principles of service-orientation. This research was internationally acknowledged and published in trade magazines, industry Web sites, and also documented in his second and third SOA books.

As a result of his research into industry-standard service-oriented computing, Thomas developed the Mainstream SOA Methodology (MSOAM), a proven set of processes and techniques for building service-oriented solutions. The methodology includes definitions for common service models and structured processes for service-oriented analysis and service-oriented design. (See www.soamethodology.com.)

For his book "SOA Design Patterns", Thomas developed a design pattern catalog comprised of sixty design patterns and two design pattern languages. This body of work was subject to a community-wide review and was published at SOAPatterns.org, a site provided by Thomas in support of establishing an industry resource for SOA design patterns. Two key compound patterns established by this catalog include the Enterprise Service Bus and Orchestration.

Thomas participated in OASIS technical committees and portions of his SOA books have been used as input for OASIS specifications and deliverables.

Thomas' company, SOA Systems Inc., is also a registered advocate of the Web Services Interoperability Organization (WS-I). He has been a long-time proponent of WS-I Profiles and has helped increase their adoption. The Chairman of the WS-I formally endorsed Thomas's first SOA book.
